How Long Does It Take For A New Website To Get Traffic?

An aspiring blogger recently asked this question in the inbox to understand how long does it take for a new site to rank on Google. The ask was for the number of search impressions and clicks a blog can get in the first 6 months and how long does it take to get organic traffic on a new website.

Here is the data of this blog that you're reading which is only about 6 months old with a few months of inactivity in between. This might give you some idea:

New Website Traffic

Six months is a small time frame for a new website (without follower base) to get organic traffic. Based on the screenshot of this blog's organic traffic, the Google Search Console data shows that:

  1. The blog got 3,700 Clicks and 76,000 Impressions in 6 months.

  2. The traffic reduced during its period of inactivity i.e. in September 2020.

  3. The organic traffic spiked all of a sudden in August 2020 when one of the posts started ranking better on Google (details ahead).

Organic Traffic Increase

The spike that you see in organic traffic in the month of August was a result of a blog post performing well. Let us take it as a base case and check how long after publishing the post it appeared and ranked on Google and saw a surge in organic traffic.

The post talked about Wix India Pricing and was published on 21st May, 2020. Its organic traffic started increasing on 21st July and saw a major jump on 1st August, 2020. According to this example, there was a pick-up time of 2 months before the post saw a major increase in organic traffic.

After carrying out a similar analysis on the other posts, there was a similar pattern observed in the increase in organic traffic of new posts. There is a pick-up time of 2-4 months for new posts to get organic traffic as long as the SEO has been carried out well and the posts are evergreen in nature.

Hope this answers the question that the aspiring blogger asked. If there are any other follow-ups or requests for such posts, please share in the comments below.
