"Page Actions Are Temporarily Disabled" - How to Index?

Recently, Google Webmasters tweeted to announce that Google Search Console’s Inspection Tool is under some infrastructure changes due to which the webmasters will no longer be able to “request indexing” of their web pages through the Google Search Console’s “Inspect URL” tool.

How to Index Web Pages Now?

Google Webmasters account has shared an Introductory Guide to Indexing which can be used to understand the alternate ways of indexing your web pages.

Summary of the Guide:

There are three ways in which Google can get to list your web pages in its database:

I. Inspect URL Tool

You must already be aware of this route. It involves copy-pasting the URL of your web page into the Search Console “Inspect URL” toolbar on the top and requesting to index as shown below:

However, if you try this route now, it will show an error saying, “Page actions are temporarily disabled”. This leaves you with two other options to index your web pages quickly.

II. Submit Sitemap

One of the alternate ways is to submit the XML file of your website’s sitemap to Google Search Console. This option is available under Menu >> Sitemaps.

You need to type “sitemap.xml” as shown below and submit the sitemap of your website.

You will see a change in the number of “Discovered URLs” once the sitemap is successfully submitted. By submitting your Sitemap, you allow Google to understand the relationship between your web pages and thereby index the ones that have not been indexed yet.

III. Internal Linking

The third method to index your web pages is to internally link them. Internal linking refers to linking your web pages using hypertext. For example, if you want to read more about internal linking, I’d suggest you to read this blog post. When you click on this link, you’ll be directed to one of this blog’s posts.

By linking your recently published web pages in existing web pages (especially the ones that perform well organically), you give a sign to Google that the pages are interconnected. Thus, Google prioritizes crawling such pages. Hence, another way to improve indexing is to internally link your recent web pages.

  • Submitting a Sitemap

  • Linking them Internally
